UL 325 and ASTM F2200: The Safety Standards Behind Automated Gates

What Is UL 325?

UL 325 is the safety standard for door, drapery, gate, louver, and window operators and systems. For automated vehicular gates, UL 325 governs the operator, including its entrapment protection and how it responds when a safety device detects a problem. An operator can be tested and listed to UL 325 by an approved testing organization.

UL 325 divides vehicular gate operators into four usage classes. Class I covers residential properties with one to four single-family homes. Class II applies to commercial or general-access locations where the public may be present, and class III covers industrial or limited-access facilities used by trained personnel. Finally, class IV applies to guarded, restricted-access locations where security personnel supervise entry. What Is ASTM F2200?

ASTM F2200 is the standard specification for automated vehicular gate construction. It governs the physical gate rather than the operator. The standard addresses gate stability, openings, protrusions, rollers, travel stops, latches, and other construction details that can create hazards once a gate begins moving automatically.

The current standard covers horizontal slide, horizontal swing, vertical lift, vertical pivot, overhead pivot, and horizontal bifold gates. Rolling slide and cantilever slide gates both fall under the horizontal slide category. DK’s guide to the four commercial gate types provides more detail on several common configurations. ASTM F2200 also sets specific construction limits. Gates must resist falling more than 45 degrees from vertical if detached from supporting hardware. Bottom-edge vertical protrusions may not exceed one-half inch, subject to listed exceptions. Barbed wire may not be installed lower than six feet on an automated gate panel, and barbed tape may not be installed lower than eight feet.

What Is the Difference Between UL 325 and ASTM F2200?

UL 325 applies to the powered gate operator and its safety functions. ASTM F2200 applies to the physical gate and its construction. A UL 325-listed operator installed on a gate that does not meet ASTM F2200 does not create a compliant automated gate system.

That distinction is especially important when an older manual gate is being automated. Adding a motor does not address unsafe openings, exposed rollers, latches, protrusions, or poor gate balance. The gate must first be suitable for automated operation. ASTM’s current scope states that automated vehicular gate systems are to comply with F2200 and UL 325.

What Entrapment Protection Does UL 325 Require?

UL 325 requires independent means of entrapment protection for automated vehicular gates. In most common slide and swing applications, two independent means are required in each direction of travel where an entrapment risk exists. The same type of protection cannot serve as both required means. A slide gate with only one photoelectric sensor does not satisfy a requirement for two independent forms of protection simply because that sensor covers a large area.

UL 325 recognizes several protection types. Type A is inherent protection built into the operator. Type B1 is a non-contact sensor, such as a photoelectric eye. On the other hand, type B2 is a contact sensor, such as an edge device. Type C, permitted only on swing gates and vehicular barrier arms, uses inherent force limiting, an adjustable clutch, or pressure relief. Type D requires continuous pressure on an actuating device to maintain gate movement. Horizontal slide, vertical lift, vertical pivot, and horizontal bifold operators may use Types A, B1, B2, or D, but not Type C.

Why Do Photo Eyes and Edge Sensors Matter?

Photo eyes and edge sensors protect against different types of entrapment. A photoelectric sensor can detect a person or object before the gate makes contact. An edge sensor responds when the protected edge touches an obstruction. The correct device and placement depend on the gate design and the location of each entrapment zone.

External entrapment protection devices must also be monitored. The operator must be able to recognize when a required external device is missing or has developed a fault. Monitoring cannot be defeated with field modifications or wiring intended to bypass the safety function. These devices also need to work with the site’s gate access control options. Later repairs and maintenance should preserve the original safety configuration rather than bypassing it.

What ASTM F2200 Requirements Matter Most for Slide Gates?

ASTM F2200 places specific limits on openings and moving components that can create entrapment or pinch hazards. For horizontal slide gates, gaps between the gate panel and a support structure such as a gate post may not exceed 2.25 inches. Exposed weight-bearing rollers and other specified pinch points below the guarded height require covers or guards. V-grooved rollers must also be guarded.

Positive stops are required at the fully open and fully closed positions. These prevent the gate from traveling beyond its intended limits. The standard also addresses openings in slide gates and the adjacent fence where someone could reach through toward a moving gate. These construction requirements are one reason automated gate safety cannot be evaluated by looking at the operator alone.

Why Does Automated Gate Compliance Matter?

Automated gates can create crushing, pinching, impact, and entrapment hazards. UL 325 addresses those risks through operator behavior and entrapment protection. ASTM F2200 addresses them through gate construction, geometry, guarding, and installation.

The standards can also become relevant during inspections, insurance reviews, project specifications, and incident investigations. Local authorities determine which codes and requirements apply at a particular site. Facility managers should document the operator, safety devices, gate construction, and modifications made to the system rather than relying on undocumented field changes.

What Should Be Checked When a Manual Gate Is Automated?

A manual gate should be evaluated before gate automation and installation begins. ASTM F2200 requires manual latches to be disabled or removed when a manual gate is retrofitted with an operator. The gate must also be balanced so it does not open or close under its own weight when disconnected from the operator.

The assessment should also look for exposed rollers, pinch points, protrusions, openings, and gaps near support structures. A gate must be designed and installed so it will not fall more than 45 degrees from vertical if supporting hardware is detached. Bottom-edge vertical protrusions are limited to one-half inch, subject to the standard’s exceptions. Gaps between a horizontal slide gate panel and a support structure are limited to 2.25 inches. These are physical gate conditions. A new operator cannot correct them by itself.

How Should Facility Managers Approach a New Automated Gate?

A new gate should be designed as one system from the beginning. Gate type, operator class, entrapment zones, safety devices, access controls, site traffic, and adjacent fencing all affect the final design. The same approach applies at substations, data centers, warehouses, solar farms, correctional facilities, and industrial plants.

Security requirements should also be considered alongside gate safety.
